DESCRIPTION
The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) and the Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath) share the common goal of striving for excellence in their doctoral and postdoctoral training programs.
In 2016, a memorandum of understanding was signed by both graduate schools in order to boost collaborative work between young researchers from both institutions. The schools declared their intention to cooperate together in initiatives aimed at promoting the mobility of and exchange between students and faculty members by way of events such as the Junior Meeting; joint summer schools; mutual visits by advanced students and postdocs of each institution; and other scientific activities.
The ultimate goal is to create a strong scientific exchange, strengthen research collaboration between the respective math communities, and enhance the multicultural environment of both graduate schools. The first edition of the BMS-BGSMath Junior Meeting was held in Barcelona in October 2017, and the second one was held in Berlin in June 2019. The third Junior Meeting aims to intensify current collaborations and create new links between the two schools.
TOPICS
Scientific sessions will be focused on different areas of Mathematics, trying to cover a wide range of topics and to be of interest for all the participants. No previous background in a specific area will be required to attend and understand the talks.
FORMAT
The conference will consist of numerous talks of 3 different types, all given by people from both communities. Each day there will be a 1 hour keynote session imparted by a plenary speaker followed by 30 minutes sessions given by young but consolidate researchers. Furthermore, additional talks will be presented in parallel sessions by a pair of master/PhD students. Scientific activities will start on Monday, September 5th in the afternoon and will be followed by a welcome reception. On Tuesday, September 6th there will be a conference dinner.
PLENARY SPEAKERS
Fleurianne Bertrand
Universiteit Twente
Fleurianne Bertrand is an assistant professor of Theory of Finite Element Methods at the University of Twente. She obtained her doctoral degree in 2014 at the Leibniz University of Hannover, under the supervision of Prof. Gerhard Starke. She continued with a postdoctoral position at the University of Duisburg-Essen until 2018, when she became a junior professor of Computational Mathematics at the Humboldt University of Berlin and member of the BMS faculty. She moved to the current position in December 2020. Her research focuses on Numerical Mathematics with applications to Engineering & Materials Science—particularly finite element methods, elasticity, eigenvalue problems, and error analysis.
Xavier Ros-Oton
ICREA - Universitat de Barcelona
Xavier is an ICREA Research Professor at the University of Barcelona since 2020. Previously, he has been Assistant Professor at Universität Zürich, as well as R. H. Bing Instructor at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a mathematician who works on Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). Specifically, he studies the regularity of solutions to elliptic and parabolic PDEs, and he is mostly known for his results on free boundary problems and integro-differential equations. He is the PI of an ERC Starting Grant (2019-2024), has received several awards for young mathematicians in Spain, as well as the Scientific Research Award from the Fundación Princesa de Girona in 2019. Furthermore, in 2021 he was awarded the Stampacchia Gold Medal, an international prize awarded every three years in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Calculus of Variations.
Roberto Rubio
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Roberto is currently a Ramón y Cajal Fellow at the Department of Mathematics of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He has been a Professor Lector (tenure-track 1 lecturer) at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Universitat de Barcelona. Until February 2021, he was a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (first Individual, since May 2020 COFUND Beatriu de Pinós). He did his postdoc at the Weizmann Institute. From September 2014 to March 2017 he was an Iberoamerican Visiting Researcher at IMPA. His PhD thesis “Generalized geometry of type Bn” was supervised by Nigel Hitchin at the Mathematical Institute, Oxford University. Since January 2014, He is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, after completing the TFP Programme of the Oxford Learning Institute. Roberto earned his first PhD in 2012, by the University Autónoma of Madrid. His PhD thesis “Higgs bundles and Hermitian symmetric spaces” was supervised by Óscar García-Prada at the ICMAT.
