- Key achievements include the attraction of new talent through the Maria de Maeztu strategic plan, new collaborations with entities like the Institut de Ciències del Mar, renewal of the HR Excellence in Research award, and strides in knowledge transfer to real-world applications.
The Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) has released its 2023 Annual Report, which reflects on a year marked by significant growth and accomplishments. This comprehensive document not only highlights the progress made by the institution but also sets the stage for future challenges and opportunities.
The 2023 report underscores the research output of the CRM, which has significantly contributed to the mathematical community. Numerous publications this year have provided valuable insights, and several new projects have either begun or continued their development. This consistent research activity highlights the CRM’s mission and maintains its status as an international leader in mathematical research.
A cornerstone of CRM’s progress this year has been the Maria de Maeztu strategic plan. This initiative has been instrumental in attracting new talent to the institution. In 2023, CRM welcomed seven new PhD students and twelve postdoctoral researchers. Additionally, six senior researchers joined as affiliated researchers, bringing diverse expertise and strengthening the centre’s collaborative efforts. This influx of new talent has helped consolidate and integrate CRM’s research groups, which include members from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the Universitat de Barcelona, and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, alongside the CRM’s own staff.
One of the notable achievements this year was the establishment of new relationships with other research entities, such as the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM). This collaboration aims to bridge marine research and mathematics, demonstrating CRM’s commitment to interdisciplinary research. A significant highlight of this partnership was a meeting organized with ICM, focusing on integrating mathematical tools with other disciplines to address complex challenges.
The CRM’s dedication to maintaining high standards was recognized with the successful renewal of the HR Excellence in Research (HRS4R) award. This accolade emphasizes the institution’s commitment to creating an optimal working environment and attracting international talent. Furthermore, CRM signed the COARA Agreement, aligning the centre with international standards for ethical research and open science.
In 2023, the CRM made significant strides in transferring knowledge from research to real-world applications. The centre collaborated with various institutions and industries to develop customized, mathematically-based solutions for different challenges, ranging from data compression to virus simulation. The expansion of the Knowledge Transfer Unit (KTU) team has enhanced CRM’s capacity to support innovative interdisciplinary research, increasing the social impact of the centre’s work.
CRM continued to host and organize international conferences and scientific activities, attracting mathematicians from around the world. The centre’s colloquium adopted a new format this year, fostering more interaction and collaboration. This change has created a dynamic and engaging intellectual environment, benefiting all participants and establishing a forum for the mathematics community in Barcelona.
The achievements of the past year would not have been possible without the dedication and support of the CRM research community, those who organize activities, and contribute to communication and dissemination. Special thanks must be extended to the CRM support staff, whose patience and dedication facilitate CRM’s activities and promote its mission.
