The Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) welcomes a group of new additions that have joined the centre during this month of November, including Jordi Castellví as a PhD student in Combinatorics, Mariona Fucho Rius as the new Scientific Comm Officer, Alexandre Garcia-Duran as a PhD student in Neuroscience, Pablo Nicolás as a PhD student in Algebra and Geometry, Amaia Vielba as a PhD student in Computational Biology, and Søren Dyhr as a PhD student in fluid dynamics.

The Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) is excited to announce the addition of several talented PhD students and a new Science Communication Officer to its diverse research teams, further enriching its academic community.

Below you will find a short presentation for each of them.

Jordi Castellví is a new PhD student at the GAPCOMB research group of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where he is supervised by Marc Noy and Clément Requilé. His research is focused on combinatorics, primarily exploring the enumeration of graphs and maps, as well as studying random graphs and the limits of graphs. Castellví completed his undergraduate studies in Mathematics and Computer Engineering at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. He wrote his Bachelor’s thesis on the Bijective enumeration of constellations in Higher Genus, supervised by Marie Albenque and Éric Fusy at École Polytechnique de Paris. Following this, he pursued a Master in Advanced Mathematics and Mathematical Engineering (MAMME) at UPC. For his Master’s thesis, he delved into the Enumeration of chordal planar graphs and maps, under the guidance of Marc Noy and Clément Requilé.

Søren Dyhr has joined the CRM to pursue a PhD under the supervision of Eva Miranda. He graduated from Aarhus University in 2022, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics. His academic journey also included various electives in physics and an Erasmus stay at the University of Bergen in the autumn of 2021. Following the completion of his degree, Dyhr moved to Barcelona to pursue a PhD with Eva Miranda. As of October 2023, he started his research at the CRM, co-supervised by Ángel González-Prieto and Daniel Peralta-Salas. His PhD research is focused on understanding fluid dynamics through geometric methods.

Mariona Fucho Rius joins the CRM Research Support staff as Scientific Communication Officer for the Maria de Maeztu project. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Barcelona in 2023. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Logic and Philosophy of Science, specializing in Philosophy of Mind and Language, through a joint program offered by the University of Salamanca, the University of Granada, and the University of Valladolid. In the second semester of the 2022-2023 academic year, Fucho completed an internship at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM), where she conducted research for her bachelor’s thesis titled “Dynamical Analysis of Mushroom Bifurcations: A Deterministic and Stochastic Study.” She worked on this project under the guidance of Josep Sardanyés from CRM and Alejandro Haro from UB-CRM. Fucho’s academic interests are centred around the dissemination of mathematics, exploring its applications in various disciplines, and understanding its deep connections with culture.

Alexandre Garcia-Duran is a new PhD student in Neuroscience. He pursued his undergraduate studies in biomedical engineering at Universitat de Barcelona. He then went on to complete his master’s degree in mathematics in 2023 at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, where he focused on modelling and analysis in biomedical sciences. Currently, Garcia-Duran is collaborating with Alexandre Hyafil from the Computational Neuroscience group.

Pablo Nicolás joins Eva Miranda’s group as a PhD student. He completed his bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Physics Engineering at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, specifically within the Centre de Formació Interdisciplinària Superior. For his bachelor thesis, he worked under the supervision of Prof. Nicolai Reshetikhin and Prof. Eva Miranda, extending Weinstein’s universal construction for phase spaces of particles interacting with Yang-Mills fields to singular symplectic manifolds. He then pursued a master’s degree in Advanced Mathematics and Mathematical Engineering at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, where he addressed the computation of the Poisson cohomology groups of Poisson manifolds of  -type, a challenge initially posed by Alan Weinstein. Nicolás is currently a doctoral student at Centre de Recerca Matemàtica and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. His research primarily focuses on applying techniques from singular symplectic geometry to the study of Poisson manifolds. From November 2021 to July 2022, he was an associate editor at TEMat and subsequently assumed the role of editor in chief. Additionally, since January 2023, Nicolás has been a member of the publications committee at Real Sociedad Matemática Española.

Amaia Vielba joins the Computational & Mathematical Biology group as a PhD student. She completed her undergraduate degree in Mathematics at the Universidad del País Vasco/ Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU) between 2015 and 2021. Following this, she pursued a master’s degree in Astrophysics at the Universidad de La Laguna, which she completed between 2021 and 2023. At the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM), Vielba is set to collaborate with Tomás Alarcón as her supervisor and Josep Sardanyés as her co-supervisor, within the “Mathematical & Computational Biology” group.
